Most people in the region, both in the North and South, were not wealthy before the Civil War. The majority of the population in both regions were farmers or laborers who lived modestly and struggled to make ends meet. The wealthy elite in both regions controlled much of the economy and political power, while the average person had to work hard to survive and provide for their families.
