A rain shadow on a mountainside is a dry area on the leeward side of a mountain range that receives significantly less rainfall than the windward side. As moist air is forced up the windward side of the mountain, it cools and condenses, leading to precipitation. The air then descends on the leeward side, warming and drying out, creating a rain shadow effect with little to no precipitation.
