No Nancy

By PBJ Pete

Nancy’s first word she ever spoke was “no.” That was also her first word in a two-way conversation. When her mother asked if she wanted peas in soup, she said, “No.” When her father asked if she wanted to go skiing for vacation, she said, “No.” She had even named her favorite dolly Nonita.

Nancy was silly. She sometimes used the word “never” instead of “no.” When her kindergarten teacher asked if she wanted to tell the class a story about her trip to Naples, Nancy said, “Never mind.” Nancy did tell a story about Naples to the class, though.

One day, Nancy went camping with her family. It was her first camping trip. She enjoyed roasting marshmallows on fire the most. When her father asked her if she wanted a s’more, Nancy said, “no” as usual. So, her father ate her share of the tasty treat.

“But, I did not mean it,” Nancy said, nearly crying.

“Well, you should say what you mean,” Nancy’s father said to her.

Honest Omar
By PBJ Pete

Omar’s problem was that he was too honest. If someone asked him a question, he or she would get a truthful answer.

Once, Omar’s friend Aricelli asked him, “Does my new hat make my head look funny?”

Omar said, “It kind of shrinks your head.”

Aricelli was sad. Omar did not understand why people asked questions if they did not want to hear the answer.

Another time, Omar’s uncle asked him, “Would you like to go fishing sometime?”

“Uncle, I think fishing is cruel and that nobody should ever go fishing,” Omar said.

Omar’s uncle was shocked. He kindly said, “Well, I think it is brave of you to speak your mind. You knew I might not like the answer, but you said what you felt.”
