Charlemagne aligned himself with the Catholic Church in Europe for greater power. He maintained a close relationship with the Pope and was crowned Holy Roman Emperor by Pope Leo III in the year 800. This alliance with the Church gave Charlemagne legitimacy as a ruler and allowed him to consolidate his power over the Frankish Empire and beyond.
