Enclosure resulted in less available farmland and more privatized farmland during the Industrial Revolution. Enclosure was the process of taking common lands and dividing them into individual plots that were owned privately. This led to a decrease in available farmland for common use, as well as the concentration of land ownership in the hands of a few wealthy individuals. This process often displaced rural communities and forced them to move to urban areas in search of work. Mechanized tools, urbanization, and migration were also important factors during the Industrial Revolution, but enclosure had a more direct impact on the availability and ownership of farmland.
