After making a clapping sound, the sound hits the wall, and then the sound reflects back to produce an echo.

dirt

foam

carpet

glass, metal or concrete

Glass, metal, or concrete surfaces will most likely produce an echo. These surfaces are hard and smooth, allowing sound waves to reflect off of them easily. Foam and carpet surfaces are softer and absorb sound, reducing the likelihood of echoes. Dirt would not produce a strong echo due to its porous and irregular surface.
