John C. Calhoun (1782-1850) was an American statesman and political leader who served as the 7th Vice President of the United States from 1825 to 1832 under Presidents John Quincy Adams and Andrew Jackson. He was a prominent advocate for states' rights and slavery during his time in office. Calhoun also served as Secretary of War and Secretary of State, and was a leading figure in the debates over nullification and secession leading up to the Civil War.
