The Stono Rebellion, also known as Cato's Conspiracy, was a significant slave rebellion that took place on September 9, 1739, near the Stono River in South Carolina. The rebellion was led by a literate slave named Jemmy, who was from the Kingdom of Kongo. Jemmy and a group of about 20 other slaves armed themselves with weapons and began marching south, killing several white colonists along the way. They planned to reach Spanish Florida, where they believed they could find freedom and safety. However, the rebellion was quickly suppressed by local militia, and many of the rebels were killed in the fight.

The Stono Rebellion is significant because it led to the implementation of stricter slave codes in the colonies. The uprising caused fear among white colonists, who were worried about the possibility of future rebellions. In response, the South Carolina legislature passed the Negro Act of 1740, which restricted the movement of slaves, banned slaves from assembling in groups, and imposed harsher punishments on those who attempted to escape or incite rebellion. The Stono Rebellion also highlighted the brutal and oppressive conditions that slaves lived under, sparking further discussions about the morality of slavery in the colonies.
