The condition that is most likely to require the national weather service to issue a severe thunderstorm warning is when a thunderstorm is producing damaging winds of 58 miles per hour or greater and/or hail that is 1 inch in diameter or larger. Other conditions that may prompt a severe thunderstorm warning include the presence of a tornado or the potential for flash flooding.
