Foreign Policy

As you have learned, one of the roles of the president is to set foreign policy. The
responsibility for dealing with all other countries lies with the executive branch. The
president appoints ambassadors and diplomats to represent U.S. interests around
the world.
For this discussion, research U.S. relations with one of the following rogue states
over the last few decades. Your task is to evaluate the effectiveness of U.S. foreign
policy in dealing with one of these nations:

From the article over North Korea, read the sections titled Nuclear Threat and A
New Leader.

The United States' foreign policy towards North Korea over the last few decades has been focused on denuclearization and promoting peace and stability in the region. However, despite efforts to engage with North Korea through diplomatic channels and negotiations, progress has been slow and at times even regressive.

The nuclear threat posed by North Korea has been a major concern for the United States and the international community. Despite multiple agreements and negotiations aimed at denuclearizing North Korea, the country has continued to develop its nuclear capabilities, conducting multiple nuclear tests and missile launches. The United States has responded with economic sanctions and diplomatic pressure in an attempt to persuade North Korea to abandon its nuclear program.

In recent years, North Korea has seen a change in leadership with Kim Jong-un taking power after the death of his father, Kim Jong-il. The United States has sought to assess the new leader's intentions and willingness to engage in diplomacy. There have been moments of de-escalation, such as the historic summits between Kim Jong-un and U.S. President Donald Trump, but ultimately little progress has been made on the issue of denuclearization.

Overall, the effectiveness of U.S. foreign policy towards North Korea can be debated. While efforts have been made to address the nuclear threat and engage in diplomacy, the lack of concrete results and continued provocations from North Korea suggest that there is still a long way to go in finding a lasting and peaceful resolution to the situation.
