Fresh Start

L. Han

Kendall nervously reached for the doorbell. It started the previous day when Flora said “Lost Love Found” was the dumbest song ever. Kendall liked the song enough, but for some reason defended it like it was the most important song ever.

Hesitating to ring the bell, she couldn’t remember what it was she said to Flora, but it was something like “takes one to know one.” Because Flora is a person and not a song, Kendall knew it was a dumb thing to say. She still didn’t know why she said it, but it led both of them to say a lot of painful things.

Ringing the doorbell, Kendall gripped the photo album tightly. She shouldn’t have stormed out of the house with it the day before. At that point, though, she was already thinking of Flora as a former friend, and she didn’t want a former friend to have all their pictures.

Flora answered the door. Kendall handed her the album, fighting back tears.

Flora opened the door wider, “Are you coming in?”

Kendall, confused, responded, “What?”

Flora grabbed her hand, pulling her inside, “I don’t know what happened yesterday, but I’m over it. If you are, too, let’s go up to my room and look at pictures.”

Kendall sighed with relief. She didn’t want to lose her best friend over a fight about a song.
