The rulers of the Arab empire generally treated the various religions under their rule with tolerance and respect. They allowed Jews, Christians, and various sects of Islam to practice their faith freely, provided they paid the jizya tax. However, there were instances where rulers imposed restrictions on non-Muslims, such as forbidding them from holding certain positions of authority or building new places of worship.
