Authoritarianism is a system of government or a way of governing that is characterized by strong central power and limited political freedoms for individuals. In an authoritarian system, the government holds most if not all of the power and often restricts or controls political opposition and dissent. Individual rights and civil liberties are often limited in favor of order and control. Examples of authoritarian governments include dictatorships, oligarchies, and some forms of monarchy.
