York was an enslaved person who belonged to William Clark, one of the leaders of the Lewis and Clark expedition. York played a crucial role in the expedition, assisting with hunting, navigation, and forging relationships with Native American tribes they encountered along the way. Despite his contributions, York was not granted the same privileges as the rest of the expedition members and was eventually returned to slavery after the journey was completed.
