The lining of the uterus is built up as a result of hormonal changes that occur during the menstrual cycle. Specifically, the hormone estrogen stimulates the growth of the endometrial lining, which thickens in preparation for a potential pregnancy. If fertilization does not occur, the lining is shed during menstruation.
