Diego Velázquez did not audition for the role of King Philip's court painter. He was recommended for the position by his father-in-law, who was also a painter and knew King Philip. Velázquez' talent and skill as an artist ultimately led to his appointment as court painter, where he served King Philip IV of Spain for the rest of his life.
