River deltas are formed by the deposition of sediment carried by the river as it flows into a body of water such as a lake or ocean. When the river water slows down upon reaching the stiller waters of the body of water, it can no longer carry its sediment load and deposits it, forming a delta. Over time, this process creates a fan-shaped landmass of sediment at the river's mouth. The shape and size of a delta is influenced by factors such as the volume of water flow, the amount and size of sediment being carried, and the tides and currents of the body of water into which the river flows.
