The 22nd Amendment to the United States Constitution limits the number of terms a president can serve to two. This amendment was passed in 1951 in response to Franklin D. Roosevelt being elected for four terms as President of the United States. Roosevelt served as president from 1933 until his death in 1945, being elected to four terms total. The 22nd Amendment was put in place to prevent any future president from serving more than two terms, in order to avoid consolidating too much power in one individual's hands.
