Border ruffians were known for their violent and aggressive tactics in supporting the pro-slavery cause in the Kansas Territory during the period leading up to the American Civil War. Some of the tactics they were known for included illegally crossing the border from Missouri into Kansas to vote in elections and intimidate anti-slavery settlers.
