The main purpose of the Iroquois League, also known as the Haudenosaunee Confederacy, was to establish a political and diplomatic alliance between the five major tribes of the Iroquois people (Mohawk, Seneca, Onondaga, Oneida, and Cayuga) in order to promote peace, cooperation, and mutual protection among the member tribes. The League also served to resolve conflicts, coordinate collective action, and address issues of common concern, such as intertribal warfare, trade, and diplomacy with neighboring Indigenous groups and European colonizers.
