What would have happend if Montresso did not brick Fortunado in the wall in "The Cask of Armantillado" story?

If Montresor did not brick Fortunato in the wall in "The Cask of Amontillado," it is likely that Fortunato would have eventually discovered Montresor's true intentions and sought revenge. Fortunato was already suspicious of Montresor's motives and had expressed skepticism about the Amontillado wine and his own safety. In all likelihood, Fortunato would have found a way to turn the tables on Montresor and exact his own form of revenge for the betrayal. This could have potentially led to a violent confrontation between the two characters, resulting in serious harm or even death for one or both of them. Ultimately, if Montresor had not followed through with his plan to brick Fortunato in the wall, the story would have taken a much different and more unpredictable turn.
