Who were the copperheads

The Copperheads were a faction of Democrats in the North during the American Civil War who opposed the war and sought a negotiated peace with the Confederacy. They were largely based in the Midwest and were seen as sympathetic to the Southern cause. They were called "Copperheads" by their opponents, who viewed them as poisonous snakes. The Copperheads were a significant political force during the war, but their influence waned as the war progressed and support for the Union cause strengthened.
