Alexis de Tocqueville and Democracy in America

(1) Alexis de Tocqueville was a nineteenth-century French sociologist and political theorist who wrote one of the most influential books about the United States written by a foreigner, Democracy in America.
(2) Tocqueville was born in 1805 into a wealthy family. (3) He studied law in Paris before beginning a government career as a magistrate in Versailles. (4) His career advancement was blocked in 1830, however, by the rise of King Louis-Philippe, who was not friendly to aristocrats.
(5) Needing a new direction for his life, Tocqueville obtained permission in 1831 to go to the United States to study the American prison system. (6) Along with his friend Gustave de Beaumont, he toured the country for nine months, traveling on horseback, by stagecoach, by steamboat, and even in canoes. (7) The two men visited prisons in several states, including New York, Michigan, Pennsylvania, and Louisiana. (8) But they also met Americans in every walk of life, from poor settlers on the frontier to President Andrew Jackson in the White House.
(9) When they returned to France, Tocqueville let Beaumont write most of the report on American prisons while he began work on a book about American culture and politics. (10) The book, Democracy in America, was published in two volumes in 1835 and 1839.
(11) Democracy in America records Tocqueville's observations and thoughts on equality and individualism in the United States. (12) His feelings about individualism were mixed. (13) Although he admired American individualism, he feared that a society of individuals could be a lonely place to live. (14) He also warned that the absence of any social structure could lead to a "tyranny of the majority" in which the rights of minorities were harmed. (15) It was ironic, Tocqueville believed, that a country that valued freedom so highly kept millions of people in slavery. (16) After publishing the second volume of Democracy in America, Tocqueville briefly entered French politics but soon retired and spent the rest of his life writing a history of France.
