Political conditions:

Social conditions:
-Free African Americans had more autonomy and could live independently, often in segregated communities with their own institutions such as churches and schools.
-Enslaved African Americans had their lives controlled by their owners and were subject to harsh treatment, separation from family members, and limited opportunities for social interaction.

Economic conditions:
-Free African Americans were able to work for wages, own property, and engage in trade and entrepreneurship to some extent.
-Enslaved African Americans did not have the ability to own property or retain the wages from their labor, instead being forced to work without compensation for their owners' benefit.
