I am currently living in an Anasazi community nestled within the beautiful cliffs and mesas of the southwestern United States. Our homes are built directly into the rock walls, using sandstone blocks and mortar made from local clay. The structures are multi-story with flat roofs, and many families live together in communal dwellings.
Our main sources of food come from farming and hunting. We cultivate maize, beans, and squash in terraced fields that we have built into the desert landscape. We also collect wild foods such as pinon nuts, mesquite pods, and prickly pear cactus. Hunting small game like rabbits and deer supplements our diet, while we also gather herbs and plants for medicinal purposes.
Our community is deeply rooted in traditions that have been passed down for generations. We gather for ceremonies and dances to honor the spirits of the land and give thanks for our bountiful harvests. Pottery making, weaving, and basketry are important skills that are practiced by both men and women, and these crafts are not only functional but also hold cultural significance.
The land around us is characterized by harsh desert conditions, with arid plains, rugged canyons, and towering mesas.
