One primary source from uprisings and resistance movements in the Americas is the Haitian Declaration of Independence, also known as the Haitian Constitution of 1801. It was written by Toussaint Louverture, a leader of the Haitian Revolution, and was adopted on May 20, 1801. The declaration proclaimed the independence of Saint-Domingue (present-day Haiti) from France and established Toussaint Louverture as the Governor-General for Life. It outlined the principles of the newly founded nation and emphasized equality and freedom for all Haitians.
