The House of Representatives decided the election of 1824 because none of the four candidates (John Quincy Adams, Andrew Jackson, Henry Clay, and William H. Crawford) received an outright majority in the Electoral College. According to the Constitution, in such a situation, the election is then determined by the House of Representatives.
