The SAT is a standardized test designed to measure readiness for college. The test was first introduced in 1926. Its structure, content, and even name have been transformed over the years. SAT was originally an acronym for Scholastic Aptitude Test. Today, SAT is simply the name of the test-it is not an acronym. The SAT consists of three sections- mathematics, critical reading, and writing-with a maximum achievable score of 800 in each section. The test is generally completed in about four hours. SAT scores, coupled with a student's high school grade point average, are instrumental for admission to many colleges and universities.
