The U.S. decided to use atomic bombs on populated cities, Hiroshima and Nagasaki, to bring a swift end to World War II with Japan by demonstrating its immense military power and ability to inflict devastating destruction, which would hopefully compel Japan to surrender and avoid a costly and prolonged invasion.
