What is Loess

Loess is a type of sedimentary deposit composed of fine-grained, unconsolidated, and wind-blown particles. It is typically a yellow or brownish silt that is rich in clay and silt-sized particles. Loess deposits can range in thickness from a few centimeters to several meters and are often found in areas with a history of glaciation or arid and semi-arid regions. Due to its high porosity, loess can be easily eroded and transported by wind and water. Loess is an important soil formation and is known for its fertility, making it suitable for agriculture.
