What are tambos?

Tambos are traditional structures found in the Andean region of South America, particularly in Peru. They are small, simple, and often made of adobe or stone. Tambos were historically used as way stations or resting places for travelers, merchants, and messengers along the Inca road system, known as the Qhapaq Ñan. These structures provided shelter, food, and other necessities for people traveling long distances. Today, some tambos have been reconstructed and serve as tourist attractions or cultural heritage sites.
