If decomposers did not exist on Earth, the process of decomposing organic matter such as dead plants and animals would be severely hindered. The accumulation of dead organic matter would lead to the depletion of nutrients in the soil, making it difficult for plants to grow and thrive. This would disrupt the food chain and result in a decline in the populations of herbivores and carnivores that depend on the plants for food. Eventually, the ecosystem would become imbalanced and may collapse altogether.
