Why did president Lincoln want reconstruction to be simple and easy

President Lincoln did not necessarily want reconstruction to be simple and easy. Rather, he desired a moderate and lenient approach to reconstruction in order to quickly restore the Union and heal the wounds from the Civil War. Lincoln believed that a harsh or punitive reconstruction policy would only prolong the bitterness and division among the southern states. He believed in preserving the Union and wanted to provide a smooth transition for the southern states back into the United States.
