A doctor would prescribe medicine to someone who is in good health in order to prevent or treat an illness or condition before it becomes severe. This is known as preventive medicine. For example, a doctor may prescribe antibiotics to someone who has been exposed to a contagious illness, such as strep throat, to prevent them from becoming sick. Additionally, a doctor may prescribe medication to someone who is at high risk for developing a certain condition, such as cholesterol-lowering medication for someone with high cholesterol, in order to prevent future health problems.
