The power to start the impeachment process rests with the House of Representatives. According to the U.S. Constitution, Article I, Section 2, Clause 5, the House of Representatives has the sole power of impeachment, which means they have the authority to formally accuse federal officials, including the President, Vice President, and other civil officers, of "Treason, Bribery, or other high Crimes and Misdemeanors." The Senate then holds the trial for impeachment, presided over by the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court.
