Think of a play or film you have seen or book read where two major characters are in conflict with one another. Describe the two characters and throughly explain the source of their conflict. Then discuss how their conflict plays out by not only defining the conflict, but also providing examples of the falling action and their resolutions

One play that comes to mind is "Romeo and Juliet" by William Shakespeare. The two major characters in conflict are Romeo Montague and Juliet Capulet.

Romeo is a passionate and impulsive young man from the Montague family, who is in love with Juliet, a beautiful and innocent girl from the rival Capulet family. Romeo is characterized as being melancholic and is quick to fall in love. He believes in the power of love and is willing to risk everything for it.

On the other hand, Juliet is a sweet and obedient teenager who falls deeply in love with Romeo. She is known for her intelligence and maturity. Juliet is torn between her duty to her family and her love for Romeo. She is willing to defy her family's wishes and run away with Romeo to be together.

The source of their conflict lies in the long-standing feud between the Montagues and Capulets. Their families have a deep hatred for one another, and their love is seen as forbidden. The conflict intensifies when Romeo kills Juliet's cousin, Tybalt, in a fit of rage, causing a rift between them since Juliet is torn between her love for Romeo and her loyalty to her family.

The falling action of their conflict comes when Romeo is exiled from Verona as a punishment for killing Tybalt. Distraught, Juliet seeks help from Friar Lawrence, who devises a plan for them to be together. Juliet fakes her death by drinking a potion, and the plan is for Romeo to meet her in the Capulet tomb, where they will run away together.

Tragically, the resolution of their conflict becomes a heartbreaking one. Due to a misunderstanding, Romeo hears of Juliet's death before knowing about the plan. Overwhelmed by grief, he goes to the tomb and takes his life beside Juliet's supposed dead body. When Juliet awakens, she finds Romeo dead, and in despair, she takes her own life as well. The resolution here is the ultimate sacrifice of their lives to be together, despite their families' feud.

In "Romeo and Juliet," the conflict between the two characters is fueled by the social and familial circumstances that hinder their love. Their families' hatred and the duty they each feel towards their kin ultimately prevent them from being together. However, their love is so strong that they are willing to defy societal norms and risk everything to be together, leading to their tragic end.
