Jacques reached the front of the line, where a shipman was signing on men. He asked each man only a few questions,turning nine of his prospects away. Apparently the Orion was in need of hands- in a hurry. Jacques briefly answered a few questions about his work skills, and the midshipman nodded his approval. Jacques could join the crew of the Orion. “Sign your name or mark here,” the midshipman said, pointing to a spot in a a record book.
