Specifically, he did not win any electoral college votes in the states of Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, Tennessee, and Texas. These states were predominantly slaveholding states and had strong support for the Southern Democratic candidate, John C. Breckinridge.
