In 1903 Wilbur and Orville Wright made history. They flew the first airplane with an engine.

2

The brothers studied birds and their wings to better understand flight. Then they started building gliders. Gliders are small aircrafts that do not have an engine. They glide, or soar, by catching the wind. Eventually, the Wright brothers decided to build an airplane. They named the airplane they built The Flyer. It had two propellers, or long blades that look like a fan, and an engine. The Flyer flew for only 12 seconds, but it was a huge victory!

Eventually, airplanes became a way for people to travel. The Wright brothers' invention made it possible for people to fly.

Text 2: Ready for Take–off

1

Airplanes are one of the safest and most popular ways to travel. Airplanes can take people almost anywhere they want to go.

2

In 1903, Wilbur and Orville Wright flew the first airplane with an engine. It was small and only had a seat for the pilot. The first flight only lasted 12 seconds and traveled 120 feet. It proved that humans could fly. Today's airplanes are very different from the airplane the Wright brothers flew. Most are very large and can carry hundreds of people at a time.

3

The Wright brothers' airplane developed into the fancy planes we use today. Airplanes allow people to fly every day, something the Wright brothers would be proud of.
