To determine the best combination of window protection and roofing materials that provide optimal protection for the least cost during a Category 3 hurricane, we need to consider options that strike a balance between affordability and effectiveness. It's important to note that hurricane-resistant building materials can be costly, so minimizing expenses while ensuring sufficient protection is key.
For window protection, there are two commonly used options:
1. Hurricane shutters: These provide excellent protection against strong winds and flying debris. They come in various materials like metal, polycarbonate, or fabric, with metal being the most robust but also the most expensive option.
2. Impact-resistant windows: These windows are specifically designed to withstand hurricane-level winds and the impact of debris. They consist of multiple layers of glass or durable laminated glass.
