- Three character traits: loyal, patient, cunning
- Role in the selection: Penelope is the wife of Odysseus, the protagonist of The Odyssey. While Odysseus is away fighting in the Trojan War, Penelope remains faithful to him and patiently waits for his return. She cleverly devises a plan to stall the suitors who are trying to marry her in Odysseus' absence. By weaving a burial shroud for Odysseus' father and unraveling it each night, she uses her cunning to delay the suitors and continue to hold onto hope that Odysseus will come back.

2. Athena - Throughout all parts of The Odyssey
- Three character traits: wise, strategic, protective
- Role in the selection: Athena plays a significant role as a guiding force and protector for Odysseus throughout The Odyssey. As the goddess of wisdom, she offers him strategic advice and helps him navigate through his arduous journey. Athena uses her divine powers to assist Odysseus, ensuring his safe return home. She disguises herself as a mortal and interacts with Odysseus directly, guiding him on his path to defeating the suitors and reclaiming his throne in Ithaca.
