"The Amish"
(1) In this era of high technology, time seems to have stopped in the 18th century for a group of people who live and work with no automobiles, electricity, or television.
(2) There are about 100 Amish settlements in the United States. The largest settlement is found in Pennsylvania, but other groups can be found in twenty-three states and in Canada.
(3) The Amish are of Swiss heritage, and their religious beliefs and customs date back about 500 years. Because they are opposed to war, the Amish use hooks and eyes rather than buttons to fasten their clothes. The Amish believe buttons originated with the military. Because the Amish believe that the sun cannot be adjusted, they do not participate in daylight saving time. They do not use electricity to avoid having anything work for them on a Sunday.
(4) Children of the Amish attend Amish schools while learning at home about baking, sewing, butchering, and farming. Boys drive teams of horses from sunup to sundown in the wheat fields. While their children are driven to school by horse and buggy, Amish wives clad in long dresses meet to create colorfully decorated quilts. Men wear straw hats and full beards as they work on the family farms.
