The Chinese Exclusion Act (1882) was the first significant restriction on free immigration in U.S. history. This law excluded all immigrants who were "skilled and unskilled laborers and Chinese employed in mining" from entering the country for ten years under penalty of imprisonment and deportation. Because this specified a specific ethnic group from entering the United States, many now view this law as being xenophobic.
