The Act opens and it is New Year’s Day. Miep arrives with a cake. Even though it is a happy moment, Mr. Dussel begins an argument as he accuses Mrs. Van Daan of giving Mr. Van Daan bigger portions of the food they share. Mrs. Frank takes over cutting the cake. Anne leaves the room because as Mr. Van Daan brings Mrs. Van Daan’s coat down, a fight breaks out amongst the group. Peter takes a slice of cake right before his father was about to take it. We begin to see a new friendship between Peter and Anne begin. Their friendship grows until they are finally discovered by the Germans.
The new year begins and things have gotten more tense in the attic. Mr. Van Daan wants Miep to sell Mrs. Van Daan’s coat causing quite a stir with Mrs. Van Daan. After spending time together in Peter’s room, Peter kisses Anne on the cheek. Mr. Van Daan is caught stealing and Mrs. Frank threatens to have them removed from the attic, but Miep comes to tell them the good news that the allied forces of Britain and America have invaded Normandy and help is on the way.
It is a new year and Miep brings a cake to the family. Peter and Anne have started to have a relationship, spending time together in Peter’s room as we see that Anne has matured. Tensions remain high as each person in the attic copes with the constant fear and living in such close quarters with the others. After the allied troops arrive in France, hope is revived. One day the family notices that no one is in the offices below the attic. Shortly after, German troops come and take the family away. The play ends as Mr. Frank reveals to Miep and Mr. Kraler what happened to the family members.
Anne remains very hopeful throughout the second Act. She uses her imagination to help her feel like she is outside. She shares this technique with Peter as she is spending more time with him in his room. Mrs. Frank and Mrs. Van Daan are not pleased with this newly formed friendship and have their concerns. One day, Miep does not come to see them and after the phone rings three times, cars arrive with German soldiers to take the Franks, Van Daans, and Mr. Dussel to concentration camps. Anne has to leave her diary behind.
