Unit 1 Portfolio: Summary of Orpheus and Eurydice

A good summary should do the following:
use the “literary present” to retell events (this means you use verbs in the present tense when discussing the language, characters, and events in a work of literature)
include only important events and characters
disregard minor details and irrelevant information
present events in chronological order
use clear, concise language that does not repeat the original text word by word.

Write a summary of the story. Remember, the summary must be IN YOUR OWN WORDS and should be in a paragraph format, with 7-8 sentences only. You must use at least 3 vocabulary words from the unit in your summary. (tempered, justification, and distraught.)

In the myth of Orpheus and Eurydice, Orpheus, a talented musician, falls in love with Eurydice and they get married. However, their happiness is short-lived when Eurydice is bitten by a snake and dies. Orpheus, distraught by her death, decides to travel to the Underworld to bring her back. He plays his lyre, a musical instrument, and his music convinces Hades, the ruler of the Underworld, to allow Eurydice to return to the living world. There is, however, a condition - Orpheus must not look back at Eurydice until they have reached the surface. As they make their way back, Orpheus becomes consumed with doubt and can't resist the temptation to look back at Eurydice. As a result, Eurydice is immediately sent back to the Underworld. Orpheus is left heartbroken and justifies his actions, believing that he couldn't have lived without seeing Eurydice one last time. This tragic tale teaches us about the power of love and the consequences that come from not controlling our emotions.
