What is biopsy examination of gastro intestinal system

A biopsy examination of the gastrointestinal system involves the removal of a small tissue sample from the lining of the digestive tract for laboratory analysis. This procedure is usually performed to help diagnose various conditions affecting the gastrointestinal tract, such as inflammation, infection, tumors, or other abnormalities.

During the procedure, a healthcare provider inserts a flexible tube with a camera (endoscope) into the mouth or anus and guides it into the specific area of interest. They then use specialized tools to sample a small piece of tissue, which is sent to a laboratory for microscopic examination by a pathologist.

The pathologist reviews the tissue sample to look for any abnormalities, such as signs of inflammation, infection, precancerous or cancerous cells, or specific diseases like Crohn's disease or celiac disease. The results of the biopsy can help confirm or rule out diagnoses and guide appropriate treatment.
