In 2005, researchers named Nicole Eikenberry and Chery Smith studied the ways in which people were able to get food. They surveyed almost 400 people who struggled with being able to afford food. (Difficulty in affording food is often called food insecurity.) Among those surveyed, nearly one fifth of them said they had gotten discarded food from dumpsters (large trash cans often used by businesses). At the time of their report, in the United States, over 96 billion pounds of food were thrown away every year. In their research report, Eikenberry and Smith suggested possible solutions to reduce the amount of food that is wasted while also helping people who are experiencing food insecurity.
