One result of seafloor spreading is the formation of new oceanic crust. As two tectonic plates diverge at a mid-ocean ridge, magma rises to the surface, cools, and solidifies, creating new crust. This process adds new material to the ocean floor and contributes to the widening of the ocean basin.
