Sweet clover poisoning is poisoning that results from mold consumption in the sweet clover. Sweet clover is a plant that is commonly used as feed for livestock. However, when the sweet clover hay or silage gets spoiled, a specific type of mold called Penicillium can grow on it. This mold produces a compound called dicoumarol which can act as an anticoagulant. When livestock consume the moldy sweet clover, dicoumarol interferes with the blood clotting mechanism and can lead to bleeding disorders.
