Liquids are able to take the shape of the bottom of their container because they have a definite volume but not a definite shape. This means that the particles in a liquid are able to move and flow, allowing them to conform to the shape of the container they are in. Gases, on the other hand, have both an indefinite shape and volume. The particles in a gas are highly energetic and move freely, filling up the entire space within the container. Solids, however, have a definite shape and volume. The particles in a solid are tightly packed and organized, which gives them a fixed shape that is independent of their container.
